Why I Call Myself an Autism Mom

I am my autistic daughter’s voice and always will be

I’ve been calling myself an ‘Autism Mom’ ever since my daughter’s diagnosis when she was three. She had been re-diagnosed when she was 9.

She’s 13 now. Not only does she have high-functioning autism, but she has a list of other acronyms that places her all over the spectrum.

For 10 years, I have been calling myself an autism mom, and no one has said anything against it until now.

What Is an Autism Mom

Autism mom is a term to state that they are a mother of an autistic child. It isn’t to say that they have autism themselves. Using the term has helped them find their community.

What Does Being An Autism Mom Mean

The first thing anyone should do before speaking out negatively to anyone is to shut your mouth and use your brain. Ask yourself, why are you so easily offended? That’s easy. You have chosen to be offended by it rather than to be educated. Maybe get to know that person first before saying something stupid.

Being an autism mom is a part of my identity. It’s who I am. I am a momma bear, and I will quickly react when someone wants to bully my child. She cannot stand up for herself, but I can, and I will, and I have…
